The Latest from the
South Brooklyn Health Council

The South Brooklyn Health Council (SBHC) was formed to carry out short-term projects to help improve the health of South Brooklyn residents. Started as a partnership between the Red Hook Initiative and the Red Hook Community Justice Center TEACH Program, we are a grassroots collaborative with members representing many of the community-based organizations in Red Hook and South Brooklyn.

Our first project will facilitate access to health insurance for residents of the Red Hook Houses who are uninsured. With the help of an intern and some dedicated "Insurance Outreach Workers" the SBHC will canvas the Red Hook community to assist those who do not have health insurance. This project is well into the planning phase and the door-to-door direct action will begin within the next two months.

If you'd like to get involved with this project or with the South Brooklyn Health Council, please contact RHI.

RHI Community Change
Workers Complete:

The Red Hook Directory

RHI's Community Change Workers have completed their first project! The Red Hook Directory is a 90-page booklet outlining all of the social service organizations in Red Hook. Over 44 organizations are profiled. The goal of the project was to increase communication between service providers and community residents as well as among the local organizations. The CCWs believe this is one step forward to creating a better environment for the neighborhood.

The Red Hook Directory is a useful tool that lists phone numbers, emails, websites, mission statements, programs and services, eligibility requirements and many other useful details. Directories are available at RHI. We ask for a $5.00 donation from agencies and a $2.00 donation from individuals in order to help cover printing costs. Available while supplies last.
