Support RHI's Building Campaign!
On November 14, 2008, the Red Hook Initiative (RHI) closed its doors at 595 Clinton Street, the place that so many young people and families from the Red Hook community had come to call home. The organization that donated the space to us since 2002, needed it back to accommodate their own needs. With the help of our young people, we packed up our belongings and moved RHI into a temporary studio office on the opposite side of the neighborhood. Currently our programs are happening at schools and churches throughout the neighborhood, but something is definitely lost.
The exciting news is that we have identified a new home for RHI - a warehouse located in the heart of the Red Hook Houses. The warehouse, owned by a Red Hook native, was just built in late 2008 on an empty lot on the corner of Hicks and West 9th Streets. It almost seems as if it was created just for RHI.
RHI has already started working with a design architecture firm, Super Interesting!; because they believe in the mission and work of RHI, they have committed to doing the majority of the work pro-bono. They have created some preliminary designs that are so inspiring. In our new home, we know we will be able to serve more Red Hook residents and provide an extended array of services. If all goes according to plan, we will move in to the new RHI in late April 2009! While this is a thrilling thought, there are many bridges to cross before we get there. Over the next five months, RHI needs to raise $350,000 to renovate the warehouse. We need your financial contribution to help make this dream a reality.
